Very informative article this, Oscar. We all know roughly what’s going on, but this article seems to give a deeper and more local insight into the issues.

What’s your opinion on what’s said in it?

Personally, I like Obama’s views when it comes to Mexico..He wants to crack down and aid in a way to provide change...I f given the chance, I think he and our President Calderon could do some positive work..

We have spent so many decades in corruption that it is going to be very difficult to make a country of political and social wrongs..RIGHT..but true, strong, bilatral, asskicking teamwork could be the trick..

The problem is ...it has to be done quick..In 2012 we will have a new president. Calderon has ruffled so many feathers by ousting corruption, reforming corrupt educational systems, political offices, removing entire corrupted town police forces..it is almost a sure thing his party will not be voted back..everyone wants change, but the big guys running the show want to keep making cash.

The truth is we need the U.S. and the U.S. needs us..We are bound to one another for good or bad..Now we just need bilateral presidency terms and elected to coincide for favorable change..higher wages in Mexico, more oppoertunities.. We don’t want to be the U.S.’s puppet..Mexico as a whole will not bow to the powers...but we do need and want a guiding hand in reform.

Let’s see how it pans out and hope either way Mexico can improve and learn to walk on ”our own two feet” once again.

Many thanks for this information Oscar.

It’s kind of a privilege to be able to get opinion from ”the horse’s mouth” as we say.

Kinda makes Mexico realler for me. (Yes, of course I know that ”realler” isn’t inglitch.)

This is my opinion..Of course there are many who like things just as they are corrupt and dysfuctional as a whole, allowing 1% of our country to live like kings, while the rest of us fight tooth and nail to stay afloat...

A major factor in the U.S. election is illegal immigration..what to do with the 12 million already there..I have always made my view very clear I am AGAINST illegal immigration to any country from any country. but even I am at a loss of how to repatriate so many.. How will it affect Mexico and more importantly: How will it affect children born to illegals who know nothing of Mexico, language, culture, etc..

It is a bridge that will need to be crossed. Mexico has to take responsibility for it’s family...all of us.

”Against illegal immigration”. This is a complicated issue with no easy answers. It seems to me that;

a) Illegal immigration permits economic growth because illegal immigrants work for less but produce as much.
Downside - they’re descriminated against.
Upside - (see Celso’s article) they earn money for their families.

b) Illegal immigration means that we live in a world where the immigrant workforce is exploited.
Downside - see(a)
Upside - see (a)

????????????????

Trust you to write interesting articles!!!

The fact that they have to do it ILLEGALLY proves that a) Mexico is not taking care of it’s own. b)Mexico not only is Not taking care of it’s own, but profiting for each one that goes.

There only true upside are never felt by the immigrant or the common citizen on either side of the fence.

I am against illegal immigration because it allows my country to continue it’s corrupt, neglegent ways at the cost of millions of families.

Understood. 100%. you’re absolutely right, and it just goes to show that my theoretical understanding, even though well intended, doesn’t match with what’s happenin’ down there.

Thank you.......

I think Your theory is correct for Legal Immigration...Initially a legal immigrant will work for lower wages, slowing working their way up the pay scale..Legal immigration is wonderful as it creates rich culture and yes, economic growth..Society broadens, Jobs will be created and there will always be someone to work them.. It’s all win win..Everyone is contributing to a common good..

Illegal immigration is exploitation and quite frankly, in the case of Mexico a form of human trafficking and slave market.. The illegals will work long hours in unsafe conditions with no security or benefits..

EXAMPLE: take the construction business in the u.s. Much of it’s work is by union labor..Wages can range from $15- $36 U.S. per hour. plus benifits of insurance, overtime, paid vacation, etc...An illegal mexican immigrant will work the same for $6-10 U.S., not 40 hours a week, but 60 or 80..no over time, no health insurance..nothing more than work, work, and work...and they are damn happy for it..

This allows the u.s. to profit on cheap labor AND when the illegal sends his money to his family in remittances, Mexico profits.. Annual remittances to Mexico are on average $27 BILLION U.S. making this money the second largest national income we have...second to petroleum.

What does this also allow?
1) Mexican families to break.. Dad’s in the U.S. working to send cash so Mom and kids can EAT because Mexico just didn’t care.
2)the laborers in the U.S. to break..Their jobs are being replaced.. Some may say they were paid to much to begin with...but who are we to throw stones..It was a system and pay scale created by them that WORKED.

In the meantime who’s smiling?
1)The U.S. government..they are saving cash by using illegals..when an illegal needs health care, etc they charge their working taxpayers to foot the bill.
2)Mexico smiles...at each and every one of those BILLION dollars..No need to help the poor or inject more into social programs, employment opportunities, or health systems...iT HAS BEEN PROVEN THAT IT PAYS BIG TO KEEP THEM POOR AND FORCE THEM OUT.

This agreement is breaking families socially, economically, and emotionally on BOTH sides.

NOW your’e talking.

This is a human tragedy. Full of victims but no guilty party. No-one can blame the USA for what they’re doing (Mexicans get work, the economy works), and no-one can blame the Mexican government’s (anything-to-save-a-buck) policies either.

The result, however, is what you just said. Desagregation of Mexican society and Mexican culture and family values and families themselves. Mexico.

Oh Oscar, I live in a rich country and have never had to confront this kind of detestable compromise. Just know my friend that there are many people who wish things were different. Believe Me.

It is a sick reality in many parts of the world... It shows the true illness and loss of humanity...

Humans were made to create, move, manipulate economic MARKETS...NO HUMAN should be forced to be a PRODUCT moved on the MARKET...
