Are Mexican illegal immigrants really the cause of the U.S. socio-economic decline?
Before I begin, let me say, I do know that everyone, including their dog seem to have an opinion regarding the immense population of illegal immigrants residing within the United States. Opinions are wonderful. I personally believe every citizen of every color, creed, and nation has or should have the God given right to their own unbiased opinion and the due right to express themself.I believe in educating oneself, demanding and seeking information.

I, personally, am an independent individual. I do not follow, act, or believe simply because I “should”. I am not persuaded by a simple “popular census” of my family, friends, or society. I will definitely not claim to be all knowing, but I at least gather facts and investigate before entering the unknown.
With that in mind, let us begin.

A few days ago, I was reading the MSN homepage and came across a very interesting topic headlined “Would the United States be affected by the deportation of all illegal immigrants?”,being the inquisitive type of person that I am AND being Mexican, I obviously could not resist and immediately clicked to view more. The article itself was fair in my thoughts, I should have been content and stopped there, but I didn’t. Before I knew it I had blindly clicked and entered a forum on the subject. It was much like watching a scary movie, you shut your eyes and cover your ears, but you just can’t stop watching it. There I was, stunned, angered, and at times humored by the overwhelming comments.

Just to make myself clear, I am FIRMLY against illegal immigration, but this blog was insane. Illegal immigrants were blamed for everything from taking a handicapped woman chance to walk, over crowded schools, gang killings and violence, increased crime, home foreclosures, drug trafficking, and more. They were called cancerous tumors, destructive dysfunctional chaos, and Idiots. (By the way, those are a few of the nicer comments.)

Again, everyone has a right to their opinion, but there were some serious misconceptions, discrimination, and for lack of a better word, down right ignorance being blogged. Let me just give a quick summary and maybe a little personal insight on the matter. First of all, not every dark skinned, Spanish speaking person is Mexican. I will be the first to admit, the majority are Mexican, but there are also many central and south Americans, and that’s only talking about the “dark skinned, Spanish speakers”. There are many illegal immigrants from around the world who have entered and continue living in the United States.

Many bloggers claimed they had to wait in hospital emergency rooms with a true medical emergency because an illegal Mexican takes their kids into the hospital with a slight temperature or a common cold. Others claimed they had to take their children out of school because of the overwhelming illegal Mexican gang violence. Stories were told of American’s homes being foreclosed because of illegal Mexicans (I still haven’t grasped the concept of that one).
Public schools are overcrowded by Illegal’s children, illegal drugs are now a problem (NOW a problem?), hardworking taxpaying citizens are out of work, it takes longer to enter automated telephone services, because now you can’t just hear the menue, you must first decide whether to press 1 for English or 2 for Spanish, and lastly an MIT engineer with a Masters Degree now can’t find work because his company has decided to outsource and or hire someone from Mexico.

For the time being, and the sheer fun of it, let’s say you have somehow, without a doubt, confirmed that the person or persons creating so much turmoil, disruption, and in general changed your way of live, in question is or are Mexican. How do you know if they are legal, illegal, or a third generation red blooded, tax paying, genuine American citizen of Hispanic descent? Do you stop and ask the gang members, parents of a sick child in the emergency room, school children, drug dealer, murderer, welfare recipient, and every other hispanic walking the street to show their birth certificate, passport, or greencard? I think not.
I understand Americans, with just cause, are upset, angered, and afraid for their families, employment, security and future... but don’t be blinded. We must seek binational reform. Mexico must make an extreme sacrificial government reform. We need obligated continued education or trade school, higher wages and less taxes, we need our government to really stand up and notice its own citizens and our needs. But the United States can not put its woes entirely upon the Mexican national, legal or illegal. There is not a business in the universe that can survive, much less prosper, without continuous consumer consumption. Simply put, you can’t sell if you don’t have a client market. The overwhelming “consumer consumption” of illegal immigrants and drugs, within the United States, has been and continues to be a very lucrative and ever prospering marketable business.

This is one of the stupid effects of racism. And given an uniformed populace who will persist on spewing knee-jerk reactions, illegal immigrants will forever fall under the category of social pariah.

But many ills of society are, indeed, contributed to by illegal immigrants. One wonders whether these people who choose to displace themselves out of their homelands do really have a choice. It’s always greener over on the other side.

On the other hand, illegal immigrants contribute to a thriving underground economy. :)

I personally feel for the illegal immigrant of any country. When one enters another country, the are in fact selling themselves. Unfortunatly they no longer have a right to opinion, to legal aid, education or medical care. They are selling their souls to the devil ,so to speak.

Hi Grace,
I just wanted to thank you again on your comments and incredible insight. It is true that illegals cause their fair share of ills within their ”adopted” society, but people must take notice and educate themselves. Not every hispanic is illegal.

Right, Oscar. I don’t think anybody would choose to be illegal some place else if conditions in his or her motherland are conducive enough for a more humane and comfortable life.

But the burden of responsibility falls on the shoulders of original homelands. If their citizens can’t get enough decent jobs (due largely to not having educated or learned skills and lack of job placements), these countries will further deplete their human resources.

I know how you feel about this slur. I’m from a country that is known for labor export. And a small percentage of those who leave for greener pastures abroad are not properly documented.

But I blame the Philippine government entirely on this phenomenon of labor export. There is a gross shortfall on education that can produce skills commensurate enough to the needs and prerequisites of the workplace.

Well, here we are, one person from a developing country commiserating with a brother from another developing country. :)

I agree with Grace, people migrate to find another way of life. They simply reach dead ends in their own country and are forced to flee their place of birth in order to survive.
America has kept an open door policy on immigrants from all countries for years. Now its just unfair to call these immigrants names. If they are out on streets and hospitals also means America as not been able to take care of them...

Yes, they and many around the world, have reached dead ends within their own countries, but they CAN enter legally and enter with the benifits of security and protection. I have heard horrific stories of abusive, slave labor among illegal immigrants. It saddens me to hear such stories, but no one can help them, they are left without a voice, mute.

Just like the immigrant workers has made the Gulf countries lazy bums the illegal immigrant workers in the USA is making the Americans such. They are so used to taking for granted that a Mexican maid would always be available and they don't have to pay them that much.

It does and can cause laziness. Even here in Mexico, one will look for a employee from a southern, indigenant state to clean their homes, raise their
children and more. That is why government reform is so important. There isn’t a ”caste” system in Mexico. There is no official law that states if your mother was a maid or your father was a gardener that their children must be as well, but without education, there are few choices but to follow the line.

I agree, not so much with a government reform, but maybe the educational system should be tweeked a bit. Focus a little more on our childrens education is the wonderful foundation that this country needs. If you are to walk in to a municipal library here (if there is one!) you will find books without covers, math and spanish books from the 4th grade! and a few others, its depressing, no wonder why the average mexican reads 1 to 2 books per year.

If you cant make or help your child leave ignorance, a future as a maide or gardener is expected. Give your kids the real weapons they are going to need to go up against anything in life, and or a corrupt government that wont change until we take that extra inch and leave our ignorance behind.

I’ve got to hand it to you Seth, vey well spoken. We are in dire need of educational refrom. Libraries (as you know) are more than scarce in Mexico and when you do find one, they are, well, Mexican to Mexican, useless and filled with junk. As citizens and parents we MUST, strive to force our government to give our children the higher education and the tools they need to not only survive, but thrive on an international level.

For developing nations, the key lies in education. To have a wider access to better education - through hiring and professionally paying good teachers. Undereducated and grossly misinformed teachers will only hand down the same wrong knowledge and information.

But what can we do? Our governments are far more bent on reserving the biggest slice of the national budget pie to funding the military and armed forces.

We are paranoid for the wrong reasons. It’s far scarier when the fabric of a nation is reduced to shreds because of very slow progress.

I cant believe that a country such as teh US that allows anyone to carry a gun, has attacked EVERY region of the world and is run by thieves would rather blame a group of people that need its help for all its ills. Instead of reforming the states and helping mexico become a prosperus and productive neighbour (hence stop the need for imigration) they prefer to stay horrible capitalists that are only interested in overseas drilling rights and keeping military camps in countries that they just DONT OWN. I am very sorry but the ills that Americans bring on to the world by not voting are FAR FAR greater that staying in line longer or having to work instead of eating hotdogs because someone who has the need and strength has beat you to the job you wanted. Touch shit rule. The same the big state side companies impose.

Hi Mario,
I won’t lower myself to ”bash” my neighboring country. (Although your comments are duely noted and appreciated). I refuse to ”blame” the United States for our countries woes, our country is and has been in great turmoil, but OUR government must help us so that our own citizens are not entering illegally and unprotected. If one of our LEGAL citizens happens to get a job and not his American counterpart, there is a reason. Maybe he or she IS better qualified ?!
Thanks for your comments

Illegal immigrants would always remain a problem for richer countries with lots of job opportunities if they share borders with poor countries with lesser job opportunities. Take for example the problem USA is facing with Mexican illegal immigrants. Similarly India is facing the same problem with Bangladeshi immigrants though we allow Nepalese citizens to work freely in India and stay as long as they like.

Why not Americans cross over the border to Mexico in search of job opportunities? Why is it the other way round always, each and every time? The simple answer is poverty. The difference between a rich and a poor country. Only education will not help. Along with it the economy of a country should be vibrant. I am glad that Mexico is going through a very nice phase now. I am sure this will reduce in next few years when there would be more jobs back at home.

Thanks for your comment Jose.. God willing, although I doubt to see it in my lifetime, our government will help its citizens, educate us, create more jobs, and allow us to live legally and independently within our own country.

There is also a problem of illegal firms that traffic these illegal migrants with promises of jobs in the US. There is a huge demand for domestic servants, menial workers and babysitters in the US. The business is a flourishing one.

You are so right Evan. These snakes work on both sides of the border. Many offer a work permit, etc. There are many many families (between parents, aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, etc) here in Mexico who gather the $30,000 or more peso fee to send ”the most fit” for a chance of employment in the united states. Of course they are offered the moon and the stars, promised work permits, citizenship, well pay jobs, proper living and health provisions, but unfortunatly it just doesn’t happen that way. The illegals are moved from place to place in trucks, etc, and if they do happen to make it across the border ALIVE or without being caught and returned, they are generally just dumped within the U.S. limits to fend for themselves and find their own way. Again, this can be avoided, by going the proper route and asking the U.S government here in Mexico for a Sponsered temporary and or permament work visa.

Looking from the ringside view it would seem that is certainly the cause of US socio-economic decline especially when you get a neocon thug to discuss the issue. The illegal Mexican immigrants have contributed a lot for the US economy at micro levels and it would be a sin not to acknowledge the fact.

First of all Tj, although I hope your comment of a neocon thug is not directed at my person, you are indeed correct. There are immense micro-level contributions made by ALL illegal immigrants, unfortunatly, many are blinded, or simply choose not to see outside of the box and aknowledge the truth.

The point is that ilegal immigration is...illeagal.

I don’t think they are responsible for this nations woes, however I do not have much sympathy for them.

Immigration built this nation. But illegal immigration makes it harder for those who are trying to do things legally.

The USA is for from perfect but unlike other countries we provide illegal immigrants with many benefits. Cutting back on some of them may curb illegal immigration and stop those who are complaining about it.

I whole heartedly agree Prince Campbell. Illegal is illegal, period. I’m not sure how illegals recieve so much government aid in the Unites States, but it is obviously a problem. The point of my article was not to lessen the ”charges” against illegals, it was to open the eyes of many citizens, that you simply ”can’t judge a book by its cover”. Not every hispanic in the United States is indeed illegal.

I swear that when I read the title of his article, I found some text that was inspired by the satirical ”The Colbert Report”. These misinformed and racists who blame the Mexicans by the crisis will start to blame the Mexicans by hurricanes, earthquake, etc..

It obviously saddens and offends me to hear/read such comments about my people. why does it happen simple ignorance. Unfortunatly the u.s. and Mexico are being abused by our own governments. Many Mexicans are being forced to leave their homeland to survive, literaaly to put food in the mouths of their families, unfortunatly the u.s. government takes advantage of the low cost labor, but taxes its own citizens to finance it.

It will be interesting to see what changes from the election will bring to the states. I am in full support of allow immigrants to become citizens provided they have no police records, employment references, are here for college, and either speak english or are making efforts to study and speak the language.
