You’ve all heard the news: Various cities in Mexico are kicking it up a notch with Pink Cabs created especially for women.
“Estamos introduciendo a México el primer modelo de servicio de transportación conducido por mujeres y que es exclusivamente para mujeres”
We are introducing to Mexico the first model of transportation driven by women and that is exclusivly for women.-Jorge Granados, CASCO Company Commercial Manager
The all women drivers are said to have been put through rigid medical and psycometric exams as well as self defense, customer service, and basic tourism and english orientation courses in efforts to provide woman of all of profiles the maximum experience in transportation.
“Some of the woman who have been on board tell us how male taxi drivers cross the line and try to flirt with them and make inappropriate propositions,” said taxi driver Aida Santos, who drives one of the compact, four-door taxis with a tracking device and an alarm button that notifies emergency services. “In the Pink Taxi they won’t have that feeling of insecurity, and they feel more relaxed.”-AP
Sounds wonderful doesn’t it? Apparently not, at least not to Women’s Rights activists. Among the problems for activists is the color. Geez, what the hell were the creators thinking? Pink, of all colors for a women’s taxi. How truley sexist.
Next up, the beauty kit. It does absolutly nothing to get to the root of the harassment problem:
“We are in the 21st century, and they are saying women have continued worrying about beauty and nothing more. They are absolutely not helping eradicate violence against women.”- Vianeth Rojas, Puebla Network for Sexual and Reproductive Rights
I don’t want to sound like a Pig, but Christ, can Femenist activists try to see a little bit more of the big picture in Mexico. Do you think women are the only ones who may find themselves harassed or unsafe in a cab nowdays? We’ve got alot of shit going on right now, security, or rather insecurity wise here in Mexico.
I found a feminist report on this very subject and was stunned at some of the comments. I had no idea something which seems so good could possibly have such evil intent hidden beneath all the pretty pink paint.
Society recognizes the oppression and abuse of women by setting up a separate system for women (separate but equal, sound familiar?) without curing the essential cause of their oppression and abuse is not establishing true justice.
Justice is achieved when women can live in the mainstream of society and feel safe and live free of oppression.
When women have to use alternative forms of transportation just in order to feel safe, how is this essentially different from women in developing countries that have to wear burkas or have to attend separate schools or - as in Saudi Arabia - are not allowed even to drive cars - ostensibly for the sake of their own safety.
Tatiana knows that separate but equal does not really mean equality, it means oppression.-Everydaycitizen
As for ‘Justice is achieved when women can live in the mainstream of society and feel safe and live free of oppression.’, Honey, every man, women, and child is yearning to live in the mainstream of Mexico’s now narco society and feel safe and live free of oppression. Come on gals, nobody feels completely safe nowdays.
If the feminists don’t like the new pink taxi’s, they are certainly not forced to use them. Even if they did decide to use them, I don’t think they’d be obliged to use the cute little beauty kit made available to them. I’m pretty sure the multiple creators of pink taxi’s in Mexico didn’t plan their cabs to be world cure to all inequalities in the female world.

I’d, personally, be thrilled to get into one of these pink cuties. I can’t even count the number of times men have had screwdrivers or worse held to their jugulars and rolled for their wallets while riding in a cab that smells of two day old vomit.
Tranquila Mujeres. These cabs are a service, not a solution; take it for what it is, nothing more, nothing less.
