Behind my Pig Flu mask: Personal Observations and Wandering Thoughts

I wasn’t scared when my Governor decided to cancel all school and public events due to the Swine Flu outbreak, in fact, as a teacher, I secretly welcomed the unexpected break from class.

I’m now towards the end of my second day of living life behind a Pig Flu mask, and I’m already feeling restless. We are not in quarentine, but have been strongly advised to stay home, don’t go out if not necessary, wear surgical masks outside of the home and avoid closed public areas.

I have been working a lot online and off in efforts to raise awareness in prevantive measures and maintaining a U.S. thread with important state and federal updates. It does keep me busy, but my mind still tends to wander, alot.

I have decided to keep a journal of simple observations and wandering thoughts. It will be my personal project, similar to the Blair Witch, but with a Eurasian bird- maybe Mexican pig- mutant human viral twist.

To date, I’d like to share the following thoughts and observations:

- It angers me to think I have so far survived corruption, currency devaluation, and psycho narcos only to be faced with the possibility of dieing from a mutated people-pig-bird virus. Just doesn’t seem fair.

-Speaking of narcos, I wonder if they will begin trafficking surgical masks and Tamiflu.

- I love my kids with all my heart, but have only recently learned that sometimes, I just don’t like them.

Claiming temporary insanity caused by isolation they have made it their mission to find new ways of passing time by teasing, tormenting and torturing one another.

- Contrary to what television would lead us to believe, not everyone who puts on a surgical masks magically transforms in looks or actions to that of a dapper, young M.D.

- If a photograph adds ten pounds to a person, a photograph of a person in a Pig Flu mask adds 20.

My wife actually looks good in her mask. The surgical blue seems to be a perfect accessory in accenting her pale skin and making the color of her blue green eyes dazzle with life. On the contrary, my mask only accents the sad reality of my big head, thinning hair, small eyes, and 2 chins, even more.

- I have ofton been accused by my wife of having “selective” listening. Now when we are in public, the masks give me an excuse as to why I didn’t “hear” her.

- When not being used in public, you can use your mask as a personal snack trough. My boys and I tried it with pistachios and small pretzels.

Just don’t let your wife find you. Mine found us and gave us each a swift sape to the back of the head. It still smarts where she got me.

- The mask are very hot.

I worry the profuse sweating it causes me may be seen as legal grounds for Public Health officials to drag me away for quarentine.

- When living under a WHO level 4 outbreak, do NOT watch movies about pandemics.

The boys and I watched the movie Blindness last night. Although the movie itself was not scary, I stayed awake wondering about quarentine. If Mark Ruffalo, Danny Glover, and Julianne Moore barely survived the conditions of a forced U.S. quarentine, I wonder what would happen to us, what it’d be like, here in Mexico in the event of a Mexican forced quarentine. Too scary to even ponder for long.

PHOTO CAPTION:INFLUENZA: WHEN TRADITIONAL PREVANTIVE MASKS RUN OUT.

Before you start, don’t think these thoughts of mine are rude, insensitive, or disrespectful. I am well aware of the very real global crisis this virus has caused. I do not and have not taken this lightly. I pray for the ill and their families around the world and that this virus will be contained, as much as possible, to Mexico, where concentrated efforts are already in place. I mourn those who have passed.

For the time being, my family and I are safe and healthy. Each and everyone of us follow strict prevenative measures as advised by the S.s.a, Public Health Secretary.

I cannot close myself in and somberly await death. We are together and alive. As so, I will continue loving and laughing until the end.

I was dieing for a break, not breaking just to die.

Nice article Oscar! Inspite of knowing that the problem is serious you tried to give it a little humor touch and believe me it worked.

Wish no more people get affected now.

Stay safe!

Ironically, this will only reinforce their beliefs that eating pork and raising pigs is an abomination.

Isn’t it?

Just kidding. I have never found a pig that I didn’t like: be it ham, bacon, cochinita pibil, pork chops..Heck, I even like pig with pig: bacon and ham sandwhiches, etc.

Sadly, you are right..Pigs are getting a pretty raw deal. Egypt has already ordered the execution without trial of over 300,000 swine as preventative measures.

Hey I will love your sense of humor. It is difficult to maintain the balance of mind in such panic situations, and only humor can help us in doing so.

Anyway I hope world gets better soon.

Arjun:

Look at it this way, being as we have been ordered to stay home as much as possible, we have that much less of a chance of being kidnapped on the way to school or work by narcos:

One must always look for the silver lining in every cloud.
