Carlos Pardo dies in NASCAR Mexico race crash

Mexican driver Carlos Pardo,33, has been killed in a brutal crash during the final laps of a NASCAR Mexico race, at Autodromo Miguel E. Abed, in Puebla.

Pardo was leading the race in the 97th lap when his car was nudged from behind in the left rear quarter panel by competitor, Jorge Goeters, and slid sideways t-boning into the water filled containment wall at the entrance to the pit lane at about 220 k.p.h. on Sunday. The car disintegrated as a result of the impact.

Carlos Pardo was a tremendous competitor and person. On behalf of everybody in the NASCAR family, our thoughts and prayers go out to Carlos’ family and friends.”
-Chad Little, Director of Racing Development, NASCAR Mexico

Given the magnitude of the impact, emergency medical staff took over twelve minutes to extract him from the wreck. He was then airlifted to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead 45 minutes later. He is survived by his wife and two young children.

Sunday’s event concluded due to the time limit following the accident. In accordance with the series rule book, the finishing order reverted back to the last completed green-flag lap and Pardo, who was leading at that time, and was posthumanly declared the winner.

Pardo had competed in 74 NASCAR Mexico Series events with 10 career wins and claimed the 2004 series championship. He also competed in the 2006 NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Mexico City.

unfortunatley, he didn’t die instantly, it took 12 minutes just to get him out of the wreckage.

It reminds of Heath Ledger who could not enjoy the success of his last movie the way Carlos could not enjoy the pleasure of his last victory...

R.I.P. Carlos!

People get bumped all the time and don't crash. People crash all the time and don't die. This time, the math was not in Carlos' favor. Here's one thing that would certainly have save him: not doing something so dangerous in the first place.

I saw an interview with the guy, Jorge Goeters, on the news. He said the accident happened because he tried to pass Carlos and get to the first position, but Carlos moved to block him. The guy didn't have time to slow down, and hit his car from behind, causing Carlos' car to crash.

He said he had been with Carlos' family yesterday, and that everything was OK between them. He seemed pretty upset.

There's also a discussion about the barrier Carlos hit. Some people, like driver Mario Domínguez, say it shouldn't have been built there in the first place.

More bizarrely, it sounds like he actually died and then won the race.

yes, due to the fact that the race was obviously stopped with the accident, it timed out...rule book states winner then becomes the won he took the last green flag...thus pardo won the race, post mortem.

I'm speechless...my thoughts and prayers go out to that man's family. I doubt the second-place racer will ever sleep again.

What a terrible track design, this accident could have been avoided with better design and safety devices.
