Hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil: Mexico responds to A.I.D.S. epidemic

A.I.D.S. is on the rise. With no cure on the horizon and very limited access to programs and medication, Mexico is facing a crisis.

There are different views as to why Mexico is seeing such an increase in HIV positive cases. For the famed Mexican photographer, Maya Goded, the increase is due to immigration. Her new exhibit, THE LINE, documents the direct correlation between the two. Immigration is ripping families apart. The exhibit is to bring awareness not only to the lonliness and pain caused by this seperation, but also to the increased use of drugs and casual sex as means for immigrants to escape the pain.

Hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil: Mexico responds to A.I.D.S. epidemic

In my belief, Maya might have a valid point to some extent. Central americans immigrate to Mexico looking for a better life and means to support a family they have been forced to leave behind. Mexicans immigrate, legally and illegally to the United States in search of the same golden opportunities, and both countries have shown a notable increase in Hispanic H.I.V. positive cases.

In Mexico, the prevailance of HIV/AIDS in immigrants is 0.6%, compared to the national percentage is 0.3%. According to the Kayser Family Foundation research, Hispanics make up 14% of the United States population, but 22% of the most recently documented HIV and AIDS cases in the country are within the Hispanic population.

Unfortunately, the numbers still don’t add up. We are facing a situation where we have two major obstacles in our country before we can even begin to combat A.I.D.S.

The first obstacle is IGNORANCE. Mexico is very devout in its Christian beliefs and unfortunatly still feels it taboo to discuss sex, including safe sex, to its children. Both parents and our government feel it unnecessary and immoral to include sex education in the academic curriculum. If sex education cannot be taught at school and the parents refuse to do it, who do we have left, who can spread the word and lend a hand in making our teens aware of the real dangers of unprotected sex? Sex isn’t the same as it was 30 years ago, in this day and age, sex education should be considered MANDATORY for every child. It literally could mean the difference between life and death.

Our second obstacle, STUPIDITY, is probably going to be tougher to tackle than the first. Not to be confused with ignorance and the lack of knowledge, stupidity is having the knowledge and throwing it to the wind. Data shows the age group most affected by the HIV virus is 25-49. Of the cases documented in this age group, more than half come from the middle class and above in economic status. Regarding of ones socioeconomic status, I think by this age, somehow and somewhere, everyone has heard of A.I.D.S., how it is transmitted and how to prevent it. Unfortunately many, whether consciously or subconsciously, choose to believe they are “above” the virus and untouchable.

Our government states its hands are tied. It can’t implement education without the approval of the parents. It can’t advocate prevention without approval of the Church. Last but not least the government definitely cannot raise the overwhelming funds needed to purchase sufficiant anti-viral drugs to offer H.I.V. infected citizens.

Our Catholic Church entered the battle against this deadly virus with a multi-million dollar plan and has promised to print pamphlets promoting abstinance and fidelity. That’s really taking the bull by the horns! While I am personally all for abstinance and fidelty, they somehow don’t seem to be high on the list of priorities for our God fearing country.

It is very obvious education and prevention our out our grasps. Maybe if stupidity were a crime, the parents and citizens “above” the virus could be criminally tried by our mighty government. The government after seeking salvation for the damnation of its people could be prosecuted by the Church and God. Finally, our Church with it’s millions to offer, could be found guilty by the ill themselves and forced to act as the sole financer in the ongoing treatment of every infected citizen who was never granted the knowledge of education and prevention.

Well, perhaps the sexual abstinence is the best way to prevent transmission of the vast majority of cases of AIDS. But castrating men would be even better! Frankly, these values are medieval church ...

You have a very valid point.. The church imposes such drastic ”laws”, but is never available to catch the downside. Pretty damn convenient. Maybe if A.I.D.S. and overpopulation hurt their pocket, they would see it differently.

I use a different phrase for stupidity, its another kind of AIDS (Acquired Intelligence Deficiency Syndrome)prevalent in our society.
I personally think only right kind of education can help in reducing AIDS.

Very thougth provoking article Oscar!

I agree with Madhuri and this is a serious issue which should be addressed. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)warned us in this context as well saying:

“Never does sexual perversion become widespread and publicly known in certain people without them being overtaken by plague and disease that never happened to their ancestors who came before them.”

“Whenever adultery becomes a widespread phenomena among certain people, death will spread among them.”

As you rightly said, people need to KNOW... its not abt safe sex, its about humanizing the animal within us.

DR Gold writes in his book
” All these hopes that depended on our modern medical instruments and medication in eradicating or at least limiting the dangers of sex diseases went into smoke …the reasons that lie behind these disease lie in the social human behavior change.”

In his book ” sex diseases , Dr shnowfield says ” society condones the forbidden sexual acts; shyness is no longer there when talking about adultery in public , decency become old worn-out habit , media nurses the concept of licentiousness claiming that it is a biological necessity . Adultery has become a common place even in the church , many priests and non commit this heinous crime in the time they are supposed examples to be followed , The Daily Mails says that more than 80% of the monks , nuns and priests practice adultery and (40%) practice homosexuality ..In US , some churches allows marriage between man and man.”

This is sheer IGNORANCE and a sick state for humanity!

This will not change till we KNOW what we SHOULD!

LOL Madhuri, two things managed to make me laugh on this page, one was the ”Our second obstacle, STUPIDITY” and second was your comment :P, it’s funny though both of them make sense.

Thank you for a WONDERFUL and insightful FARIHA. This is not something that will simply go away by closing our eyes or praying.. People must educate their children and take responsibilities for their actions. Premeditated is a crime in MOST countries I know. The parents, government, church, and ”untouchable” adults are knowingly killing us one by one. Where is the justice?

fariha,
I was making a general comment that as a whole, we can not close our eyes and pray. Many people, especially in my country, pray A.I.D.S. will just go away, it’s not working. I was NOT insinuating you made the comment. Our children need to be educated about sex for their morals and their lives sake.
Hiding sex away as a dirty sin is creating many undesired consequences: teen pregnancy, disease, rape, and that’s without getting into perverse acts. I firmly believe this ENFORCED ignorance is a type of premediated murder.

True Oscar. I agree with you that we need a practical solution to all the problems that are in our world... pakistan, mexico or india... this is our world...

And chidren being the most vulnerable need to be taught the dos and donts of everything.... but wat i fret within myself for myself is that wat will i tell my children if i know nothing myself???

We may have a different definition of knowledge, but i guess we a common definition of ignorance :)

It’s always better to take precautions lest repenting later on. Parents should instruct children as to what the aftermaths of unsafe sex could be. Well, I used to think about Mexico to be a liberal and enlightened country, but it’s not the case as is evident through this thought provocating article.

Yes, parents should tel children to have safe sex... but they should not specify a gender or a limit, right?

Or the difference between a human and an animal?

Mexico HAS come a long way in MANY areas and has MANY beautiful qualities, but unfortunately Sex education is not one of them. The church still holds the majority with an iron fist.

fariha,
you shouldn’t fret about what to tell your children. Sometimes we have to take a step backwards, before taking one forward. We can always educate ourselves, and we always continue our education. There are materials aglore to be found for learning. Besides, when it comes to your children or your future children, you will find you are a lot more educated than you give yourself credit. A lot of educating children comes from your heart. Sharing an open line of communication and instilling values and morals that you find worthey and important places a huge factor in determining our childrens future.

Every time I read your stuff, it is like a little more insight in to a Mexico we know nothing about and thanks for that. Just for a moment in that article it seemed that Mexico was more like ancient Rome than a modern country in today’s world being constantly controlled by a strong church and the heads of state needing permission from them for everything. It is as if some external men in robes control what ticks in the country and that is horrible if true.

The problem of ignorance can only be changed with awareness and in this case talking about sex and how safe sex is better than avoiding a talk about it and then ending up on the death bed.

As far as stupidity goes, mankind probably has not found a cure for that...

I feel the same way and I live here!! I don’t know where these men in robes are, why we can’t visually see them. Mexico’s seems pretty modern to me, very changed, open minded, and ready for more change....But everytime there is a crisis, the Church seems to be involved.. I don’t know who the puppet master is. Is the government washing its hands by way of the church or is the Church running the government. There is no excuse for the stupidity of the parents and the untouchables.

Oscar, pretty nice article and somehow our Govt. too has managed to stay away from the controversial ’sex education’. people still place their stupid beliefs over lives of their kids, it’s damn disappointing.

Thank you Nishant.
I don’t want people to think Mexico is a dark, horrible country, trapped in time and space.. Mexico is BEAUTIFUL, full of life and multiple cultures, but ir we don’t educate, the life, beauty, and culture will soon die.. Parents may feel uncomfortable speeking about sex to their children, but we have to do it.
The government can’t turn it’s head. We have incredible doctors, hospitals, and research here in Mexico, but it is in the private sector, the average Mexican who is infected with H.I.V., will need help from the government sector, and unfortunatly there are not enough funds for doctors, programs, and proper anti-virals offered there. The Church COULD make a real difference, they don’t need to CONDONE premarital sex, infidelity, drug use, or homosexuality, but they can not deny that it exist, and they can not deny that many of their devout followers fall into at least one of these catagories.

Churches have burgeoning coffers and its a pity that their answer to all the problems more often than not are some stupid pamphlets. True, education needs to be propagated but some lame words based on values abandoned long ago will hardly make a difference.

It would have been far better if Church in Mexico could take a more pragmatic view of affairs and stop treating sex education as an untouchable.
