Since taking office on Dec. 1, 2006, Calderon has sent more than 40,000 soldiers to battle drug trafficking across Mexico. So much has been said, and not said, concerning Mexico’s war on drugs. Different medias, international and national, display constant conflicting opinions: Some say President Felipe Calderon is not doing enough, others say he’s doing too much by unleashing tens of thousands of combat ready soldiers to patrol our streets. Regardless of which side you tend to believe, their conclusions are the same: Mexico’s war on drugs is futile and failing.
I tend to disagree. While I am, obviously, not happy with our living situation: fear of crossfire, kidnapping, and extorsion, we must take a stand. Our very nation, every life of every citizen: man, woman, and child, is at risk. We are on a fast track to a failed state. With the stakes, what they are, can we justify a simple “come what may” stance?
Mexico has become more violent since Calderon declared war. Drug related deaths rose 117% in 2008, to over 5700. Corruption and Cartels have spread through our nation like an end stage form of malignant cancer; indescriminatly devouring and destroying lives. In 2009, it is predicted, we will only see an increase in blood, violence, and death as Cartels clash and unite against eachother and the government. While the statistics and predictions are not pretty, advances have been made, unfortunatly; as ofton is in life, it tends to get worse before getting better.
“We know that the results are far from what society demands, but that’s why we’ll keep fighting these criminals across the country. Without rule of law, Mexico’s security is always in danger.
It’s clear that the federal government has not negotiated, nor we will negotiate, with any organized crime. We will fight anyone who tries to threaten the life, security or peace of mind of all Mexicans.
We know the challenges are many and that the road that we have to travel is long and difficult. But we cannot and will not back down.” -President Felipe Calderon
The point is, we finally have a President who is willing to fight for our nation, our beloved Mexico. I may not live to ever see the Mexico I once knew, as a child; but I would gladly weather the fight for the opportunity for my children and future grandchildren to know what it is to live in peace, without fear.
May God help us.
¡Prefiero morir de pie que vivir siempre arrodillado!
I prefer to die standing than to live forever on my knees.

Government officials began selling us out, piece by piece..Day by day, wallets got fatter and our security and tranquility became thinner as corruption pranced from state to state..Yet we still slept in sweet conforming slumber...
Wrong elements entered, because we allowed it..Slowly Mexico has began awakening.. The reality of our situation has opened eyes and erased ethnic and internal socioeconomic boundries..Our country is finally realizing we must stand as one nation to survive as a nation..Let’s just hope it’s not too late.
Its a hard long fight but glad that you have started on the right path. Don’t give up hope.
In the end, peace will prevail..It may not be soon, but it will never be NEVER..
I am always both inspired ,as well as saddened by your posts-and I always pray for Mexico and it’s president as a result.
Your problems in a way appear so similar as ours.Your baddies use bullets and ours use bombs-and both are heavily into drugs. And the deaths and blood on the steets ,as well as the fear on the faces or the anguish in the hearts no different.
And both countries having deployed huge forces to battle them ,seem to be making too little headway.
Buy don’t worry about the failed state bit.People have called us that for ages -and we only get stronger-and more resolute.
One day the long night shall be over ,and the sun shall rise. And God willing both of us shall live to see the day.
I, too, have noticed the similarities many times.
It is said God has a reason for everything, in our case, I beleive it is to awaken our citizens. We have failed our own..We must fight, and take back what is ours..
When the day comes, when we are free, we must remember every innocent life lost in this war..and then begin to rebuild. Rebuild a strong, united nation. A nation which can stand proundly and independently. A nation of culture, wisdom, and compassion.. A nation to pass on to our future generations with pride.
You are so right, and we are seeing this here in Pakistan.”God has a reason”.We have failed him,and he is putting us through a trial designed to awaken us to what ’He’ wants us to be.
And when we do become that, every drop shed would have been worth it; for the world shall be witness a Mexico and a Pakistan who can stand ”proundly and independently,as nations of culture, wisdom, and compassion.. nations to pass on to our future generations with pride”.
In our case Oscar while we have had -are are still facing - many obvious and glaring failures;we have also had many outstanding and seemingly impossible successes...it is the later which give us cause for hope.
Successful responses to overwhelming challenges does encourage one to greater efforts.I hope your president starts achieving some success soon.
On top of waging war just against the cartels, he has bilaterally initaited ”Operation Clean House”, recognizing that and I quote ” We must first clean our own house before true progress can be made”.
He has taken down corrupt officials from traffic cops to Mexican Chiefs with Interpol clearance..No one has ever made a stand against corruption in Mexico, as ”all hands tend to be in the same pot”...
Many key cartel kingpins and kidnapping gangs have been arrested..To insure corrupt officials do not release them in our judicial system, he has the extradited to the U.S.....
All that said...progress has been made, but it is very difficult to appease a nation who is still not safe enough to leave their homes at night..
As an organized crime, the cartels are Very ORGANIZED..Of course by taking down a kingpin, the business doesn’t stop..there’s always someone to step in and take charge..The violent acts and blood do not stop..It will take more time, more efforts.. As, citizens, we need to remember, A $65 plus billion dollar business isn’t just going to collapse overnight, regardless of the pressure...We have to keep moving forward, being thankful for the advances being made, not lose hope.. Sooner or later, God willing, all of those ”little advances and small successes” will add up.

God bless Calderon, may his efforts bear sweet fruits that will unite the nation in the fight against crime, in every society though there are peace lovers and those against it but in most cases the former should outweigh the latter. Yes have faith better days are coming its good to hold on hope and you cannot afford to give up.
Drugs are such a threat also to the global unity and unless everyone is committed we can never make it.
Your words of hope and encouragement are God-sent. Thank you.
We must, globally, make a committment , for our nations, our children, and our futures.
One day, as you said, our efforts will bear the sweet fruits of a strong, just, cultured united nation.
God Bless you and yours Ms. Rose.

Citizen moral has it’s highs and lows..You’ve seen my posts. Sometimes I’m hopeless, other times raging, but in the end, I know our President and our country has no other option..We have been taken hostage by narco- terrorists in every city of every State of our Repupblic. Every agency of every branch of federal office has been infiltrated...The bad apples are rotting us to our core....and it causes great pain and desperation throughout our land.
I, too, believe someday, we will be free again..in that time, we will need to take heed and learn from almost 70 years of mistakes by government officials and citizens alike..In the meantime we must hold our heads high,, bare down, and fight...four our lives, our loved ones and our nation.
