A Las Vegas man who’s alleged to have crossed the border to help a woman commit suicide with animal tranquilizers was ordered held without bond Friday, charged with attempting to smuggle more of the drugs back from Mexico.
Jeff George Ostfeld, a self-diagnosed suicidal person, told investigators he met 29-year-old Jennifer Malone at the “tranquilizer” section of the Topix Web site.
They corresponded for two weeks before he suggested they meet in Nuevo Progreso, Mexico, because it was described in the “Peaceful Pill Handbook” as the ideal place to buy such drugs.

According to testimony, the two travelled to McAllen, Texas seperatly where they met up and spent the night in a hotel before crossing the Mexican border in a taxi the following morning.
Upon arrival in nuevo Progreso, Mexico the went on a pill-shopping spree, buying bottles of barbithal and pentobarbital at veterinary stores.
Ostfeld videotaped the overdose last Sunday at a Nuevo Progreso motel. One tape pans past bottles of drugs on a bureau and shows Malone in the mirror’s reflection.
A second tape shows Malone on the bed crying softly, complaining of slight nausea, and asking if she would fall asleep soon.
Her last words recorded on the videotape were: I’m scared.
Ms. Malone’s family stated she suffered from manic depression and had made at least one previous attempt to take her own life.
Ostfeld’s mother told investigators he was unemployed, had no friends and spent days sleeping and nights on the computer. She said boxes with pills regularly came in the mail.
Mexican authorities sent out an alert after finding Malone’s body and Ostfeld was caught Monday morning as he re-entered the United States, carrying Malone’s driver’s license, birth certificate, wallet and global positioning system unit.
He also was carrying about 1,000 milliliters of barbithal and 200 milliliters of pentobarbital in concealment containers he had brought from Las Vegas.
He told investigators he planned to resell the drugs to others wanting to commit suicide for as much as $5,000 per bottle. He felt that he was helping out with her pain. His body language told me that he didn’t feel any remorse.”
-Immigration and Customs Enforcement investigator Robert Haberkamp III testified.
As of Friday afternoon, Ostfeld had not been officially charged in Malone’s death in the United States or Mexico. U.S. Judge Peter Ormsby declined bond, stating there was “clear and convincing evidence he would be a danger to the community.”
