Swine Flu: Was I dreaming?

A month ago today, the world turned upside down in Mexico. What was the cause? Swine Flu. The world was ending, everyone would die, and contagions lurked in every corner.

The nation went on lockdown. There would no longer be public meetings, concerts, museums, restaurants, parks, government offices, or school. Twice daily public health announcements captured every headline and media spot as one by one, every state in the nation became infected.

Every hospital, clinic, and doctor’s office was swarmed and hundreds of mobile teams were dispersed. Surgical masks, gloves, alcohol, vitamin A, anti-virals, and antibacterial gels and soaps. Sold out around the nation within the first hours of public announcement thousands of gloved and masked shoppers cleared out grocery stores, markets, and corner stores; insuring when death came knocking, it would not be in the form of starvation or lack of hygiene.

Every day meant hundreds more infected and more mysterious deaths. The blame was endless across the world as everyone and everyone pointed a finger and gave his say. It was said to of been caused by a bio-terror attack, illegal Mexican immigrants, American spring breakers, industrial pig farms, Asian birds, and global warming.

The W.H.O. kept the world in suspense, level 3, level 4, level 5. A pandemic was imminent, the killer virus cannot be contained, our only option, without a vaccine is to sit back, brace ourselves and wait it out as the the world perished, nation by nation, man by man.

Today’s news update, in a small article tucked neatly into the middle of the newspaper, announced Mexico now has 83 official swine flu deaths and 4,541 persons infected, but no new illnesses or illnesses and only 10 deaths have occured since the initial outbreak.

One month later with the world knowing nothing more than we did on day one other than we should wash our hands and mass vaccine production is in progress, I look back and wonder: Was I dreaming? Did the Pig/Swine/H1N1 flu really happen? Did it really just disappear from Mexico as abruptly and mysteriously as it appeared, only to transform and continue its wrath across the globe? Am I a lucky survivor, or is more to come.

I found no fault with how public health officials handled this. It was the media that did their best to make a huge story out of this. The Jon Stewart piece on it was spot on. "6 cases in Canada, yet the media colors in the whole expanse of the country..." Ridiculous.

Public health officials her in Mexico, did an INCREDIBLE job, no doubt about it.

It is just odd, almost dreamlike that now it is as if nothing ever happened.

The media over-reacted to the swine flu. Just like the bird flu, SARS, WMD, Jon Benet, Natalee Holloway, Global Warming, Anna Nicole Smith, and Obama. All BS. All the time.

Better to over-react than not act at all. But. the problem is, if it happens too often, people will get into "The Boy Who Cried Wolf" mentality and not take it seriously when it is serious.

Yes, there was definite over-reaction, but what is done is done...Lesson learned.

Chris:

I agree, and in fact I am quite proud and astounded in the way my country reacted facing an unknown threat.

My post is geared to the aftermath of the realities of what came to light..It feels too surreal, as if one blinked, they easily could have missed it all.

I was sent home from work because I had a bad cold. I was only allowed back when I had a note from a doctor saying "I don't have swine flu". Absolutely ridiculous. My chances of getting in a car accident on the way to the doctor are greater than my chances of getting the swine flu.

True.

One thing I did learn is that come next flu season, I WILL get my vaccine. I had no idea how deadly the normal seasonal flu was, here in Mexico and around the world.

Yes, it was mass insanity and no there will be no lesson learned from it, there will continue to be the ”cry wolf” and ”the sky is falling” alerts. Think about how old those 2 stories are and yet most people have learned nothing from them.

it just, really doesn’t seem real. Honestly, it seems like a dream...It came and went in a flash, we know nothing more now, then we did on day one..how is that?

what the hell happened?

All I can think was that it had been a slow news week and they had to have something to fill endless hours of news shows.

Maybe some politician needed to shake things up to get monies appropriated for his health care proposal, who knows?

But you are right the whole thing did have a dream like or rather, nightmarish quality to it.
