When Mexican flu fear hurts most

How do you explain ignorance, racism, and pandemics to a child? I remember watching national news coverage of the H1N1/Swine flu/Killer Mexican flu outbreak in it’s first broadcasts. I remember more when the alert hit my state, exactly two weeks ago today.

As my wife ran out looking for medicines, surgical masks, Lysol, and antibacterial soaps and gels, my daughter Isa asked me:

Is the world ending, Dad?

After explaining the best I could about pandemics and the precautions we would be taking, she calmed and went on her merry way thrilled with the idea of not having school until at least May 6.

At this time, Mexico is, on the outside, back to normal. It is less and less common to see anyone with gloves or surgical masks, restaurants are open, and stores are selling.

Last Monday, Isa and my wife began having problems with their allergies. They both suffer bouts throughout each and every seasons changing, normally, they just take their medicines and all is well.

This time their standard prescription medicine wasn’t enough and by Wednesday Isa awoke with constant sneezing and a nasty cough. Without hestitation my wife jumped in the car for a trip to Isa’s pediatrician.

Not knowing how long they would need to wait upon entering without an appointment, they stopped put on their surgical masks and entered a Super 7 for bottles of water. As they were waiting to pay Isa, still masked, coughed once and let out a tiny sneeze. That was all it took to empty the cashier’s line.

One woman cursed my wife for infecting them all, the cashier simply shook his head in agreeance. My wife tried to explain Isa had allergies, her voice fell on deaf ears as the last patron hurriedly exited the store.

Isa was left ashamed, sad, confused, and in tears as she asked her Mother what she did wrong explaining she can’t infect, she has allergies, a mask, and even coughed and sneezed into her elbow. Apparently this event opened another door to a pain Isa had been hiding.

She began to sob as she asked my wife if everyone would hate her too now. Hate you? My wife asked. It was then Isa told her how everybody hates Mexicans because they say we are dirty and made the world sick and now people are dieing. She was terrified of being called dirty and hated by the world.

I would like to tell her it’s not true, but if our own people treated her like that, what must the world think? What the hell is going on? How can the world be so ignorant and cruel?

I am saddened by this outbreak. I am saddened by the ill and the deceased, their friends and families. I am saddened and angered by the ignorance, but I am most saddened that my baby girl was subjected to this poisonous combination of ignorance, fear, and stupidity.

“Nothing in the world is more dangerous than a sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity.”-Martin Luther King, Jr.

Thank you.

Ignorance is one thing. Many are scared right now. but to say something like that to my wife, in front of my daughter is NOT ignorance, it is stupidity.

I can understand this type of reaction from many countries, but in our country, especially when people are for the most part tossing prevenative measures to the wind, how and why ? especially to a child!

Conflict breeds fear..Ignorance is already out there..The two of them combined seem to lead to a leathal combination of whether consious or unconsious of discrimination and hate.

It's sad to see when a person runs of reason arguments and turns to hate and ad hominem. But the worst part by far is when that behavior garners an admiring audience. It makes me sad that there are people in our society who gravitate toward this.

How about we all grow up and learn to not take everything so seriously? Free speech is more important than making everyone feel good.

Look, I’m all for free speech and expression, IF it is your own thought and your own words.

Free speech is not an excuse for stupidity!!!!

Learn to read and think for yourself (not what you get from yellow media headlines an others regurgetated biggotry) and THEN you can tell ME whatever is on your mind.

Funny how when white people pick on other ethnic groups they seem to completely forget the concept of white trash. There are some stupid stupid filthy lazy ass white people out there, just like any other culture or race.

UM, did you fail to see where that story originated? It was not white people being hateful to that child. You were the only one being racist here.

Orion:

There are filthy ignorant people everywhere in this world. Their laziness causes them to be content with an education past on by biggoted thoughts of others and sensationalist media headlines...

Yes, the fear my daughter had about being hated and filthy stems from what she has seen and heard of Americans primarily during this ordeal....but the point of my post is to show the ignorance and stupidity is not JUST NORTH of the border...These people, the lasy who said that to my wife were HERE in our town..

The general combination of Ignorance, fear, and stupidity causes this hate and discrimination....

This post is to show how this type of discrimination is NOT discriminate to race, color, or creed.

Nuya:

You are right, to a point.

My daughter’s original fears stemmed from reactions she has heard from ignorant and biggoted people in the U.S. who have used this illness as a political platform against not only illegal Mexican immigrants but ALL Mexicans...

BUT ...what happened to her, happened here..She was hurt by the discriminant stupidity of people HERE. Mexicans in our own TOWN.

I agree the comment by Orion was racist in it’s own and is NOT what my post was about. Discrimination in itself, has no discrimination in it’s target.

The saddest part of all of that was it was a panic over something that turned out not to be panic worthy. Regular flu kills more people every year.

EXACTLY....If there is something I have really gotten out of this whole ordeal, it is that I will make sure to never skip my regular flu shot again, and I will insure my wife and older son do not either (the younger two get theirs free)The ”normal” seasonal flu is much worse than I ever really knew.

The sad part to me, is all the politics and hype that has come out of it. Even sadder is, how can we Mexicans really complain about some other country ”discriminating” against us, when we do the same thing to our own..

Ignorance hurts.

The capacity that people have for cruelty is unlimited and unfortunately Mexico is being a victim of this.

The attitude taken by China and Argentina were ”regrettable.”

The perversity and prejudice behind this attitude that some countries have with respect to Mexico only represents what the human being has the worst.

Celso,
Mexico IS a victim, but we are ALSO victimizing and abusing our own...

We, too, are showing cruel behaviours to our own..Maybe not using the same reasoning and wording as the others, but the outcome and end result is the same.

Listen I know how you feel very well, I was so sad and angered by the detention of the seven or so mexicans in china, just because they were mexicans!!
Anyways, be strong, and share love with your daughter so that she doesn’t grow bitter, and become a racist all within herself.

Thanks.

Isa will never grow bitter.

As for China, of all of the nonsense, I can at least see thier fear.. They have lived pandemics and epedemics in recent years...quarentine was the ”quick and most sure” solution in their mind.

The hate and racism is what I’m talking about. People who are saying ”Mexicans are filthy animals who wipe their asses with their hands” and ”too bad it didn’t kill all the f-ing Mexicans” etc.. How can that shit be justified?

OMG! People really say such things?

I guess I don’t hear such things because of where I live. Living close to a university, the population is pretty diverse and more liberal than other places might be.

It can’t be justified, it is just low brow and ignorant.

Hugs to you and your family.

Oscar, I am so saddened with the ordeal that your wife and innocenmt daughter had to go through, and why do people who live in glass houses throw stones? how safe is the world? who knows what will happen the next hour anywhere in the world regardless of how civilised or developed the place is? I hate to hear people discriminating others on flimpsy grounds we should thank God for what we have at the moment and use it in the right way and not against others. Tell your daughter she is even loved by people who are seas apart and above all God the almighty loves her and that is the most important thing and please can people learn to stop blowing things out of proportion, today its me tommorrow its you so why can’t we live in harmony and love.
