You know your Country's got a bad name when

1) Starving nations won’t accept your ship with 77 tons of humanitarian aid.

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) — Haiti has turned away a Mexican ship carrying desperately needed food aid because of swine flu fears.

Mexican Ambassador Zadalinda Gonzalez y Reynero says Haitian officials asked April 29 for the ship to come to the impoverished Caribbean nation “on another occasion.”

The Mexican navy ship was to arrive May 2 in Port-au-Prince with 77 tons of rice, fertilizer and emergency food kits. The ambassador said Wednesday that the cargo and 64-member crew had been screened and showed no signs of infection. But it never left Mexican waters.

Haitian officials had no immediate comment.

2)Your citizens abroad were locked in Swine Flu quarentine.

Health officials in China might be reading too much Michelle Malkin these days; following a decision to cancel all flights from Mexico, which then warned its citizens to stay away from China, authorities in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou are reported to have rounded up at least 41 Mexican citizens, none of whom are said to be showing any symptoms of H1N1.

Portal news websites such as Global Times are closely reporting on all developments of the global endemic; in a story on the “dissatisfaction” expressed by the Mexican ambassador to China, Jorge Guajardo.

Many countries cancelled all flights to and from Mexico due to Swine flu. In the U.S. a huge debate exploded over closing the U.S.-Mexico borders. Chaos in the wake of a mystery pandemic.

In hindsite, I can see reasoning for it. The world faced a deadly unknown. Haiti, although in need, chose to avoid the Mexican risk as did China.

What I do find unacceptable are the descriminant hateful tones beneath many actions. In the U.S., for many, the flu outbreak was just cause to spew hate against immigrants.

When the first death in the U.S. was found to be a 23 month old Mexican boy who was visiting family in Brownsville with his Mother, comments flaired regarding his legality.

I saw a hundreds of comments stating illegal Mexican immigrants were the cause of the outbreak and this baby was proof. How sad when a child’s life and death is tossed so carelessly to the wind.

The outbreak did happen, no one is denying it. How or when or where has yet to be determined, take precaution, live, and love.
There’s enough hate in this world, let it go.

In defense of Haiti, they are very superstitious and many uneducated.

If so called ”educated” countries were in panic and chaos, imagine less fortunate. They did what they had to do. Imagine a fear so great, that one must decide much needed humanitarian food and aid and a mystery illness.

China has delt with deadly epedemics, when facing a new one, they decided to cut all risks..How can one blame them.

but dragging seperate issues and mixing hate into the mix is uncalled for..THAT I cannot accept nor understand.

The media did play a big role. Everything was death, death, the end of the world panic and chaos.

Somehow I just don’t see it quite as simple as you portray it.

1. Extremely poor quality of air in Mexico City. Coal industry in San Luis Potosi.

2. Late or no treatment with Tamiflu/Relenza, to which this strain is susceptible.

3. Preexistent conditions in their respiratory system (most people in Mexico City and its metropolitan area grow up with chronic diseases).

All very important factors which did contribute to the fast spread and death toll.

Many public restrooms in Mexico do not have soap and people do not wash their hands as often as they do in developed countries.

A lot of toilets in third world countries don't even have toilet seats because people steal them.

Good points, but it doesn’t not justify hate comments about a 23 month old baby’s death.

Not that it matters, but the 23 month old was from a VERY wealthy family who owned almost 50 newspapers here in Mexico..He and his mother were visiting family in Brownsville when the child fell ill. They were not sneaking across the border looking to ”steal jobs”.

It's a shame, really. Probably due to bad sanitation or poor hospital care, but maybe that's just my negative stereotype of our healthcare. I'm just glad more people haven't been killed. Hope this "pandemic" is grossly exaggerated.

Sadly, the truth is we self medicate instead of taking a day from work and going to see a doctor...

I live in Mexico City. Apart from the very poor health infrastructure here, people tend to ignore doctors and medicate themselves. It may be that the people who ended up at the hospital and among who died may have attempted to seek treatment feeling they could weather it out on their own. Doctors seldom take throat cultures in Mexico. Most, depending on symptoms will simply prescribe penicillin. It may be that this practice of taking penicillin for the slightest sign of a cold could be making Mexicans less and less resistant to certain strains of flu, especially something new like this A/H1N1 virus. But then again, A/H1N1 is a viral infection, not bacterial, but if left untreated could give place to bacterial forms of infections manifesting in pneumonia at a later stage. I am not a medical expert or doctor, so I may be wrong.

As for those in Mexico City, it could also be the high levels of pollution. Mexico City is covered by a filthy pall of smog most of the year with the exception of the rainy season in the summer. In short, and as others have suggested, the reasons may be rooted in the socioeconomic to sociological realities in Mexico itself.

I never thought about it, but throat cultures are seldom taken here..But then again when a throat culture is taken, it is generally to rule for strp throat, in which of course, would have come up negative.

Self medication is a big factor. I too, am in habit of just going to a pharmacy and trying to weather thru whatever I may have.

Add that to the age group of 20-40 who were the most affected. This age group is the most active socially and employment wise..Work, clubs, travel for work and pleasure..No time for a doctor for what is ”probaly just a minor bug”.

......In times of crisis, the so-called developed countries should rise above their prejudices.

The people in these developed countries have their hands clean since they use soaps to wash them.Sadly, their minds are dirty.I appears there is no soap to clean the dirt/prejudices existing in their minds!!

For many it is a perfect excuse to ”let it all loose” and mix politics into the already boiling pot.

It’s ridiculous for China to suddenly feel clean and act vigilantly. Just recall the tainted toys, the tainted animal feeds and the infamous melanin scare.

I also find it awry that the outbreak in Mexico is blamed on poor air quality. 6 out of the 10 most polluted places on earth are found in China. Another heavily polluted place is found in Peru.

I’m not going to blame China. It is their country, their call..Maybe having so many BIG OOPSIES caused them toreact as they did...

But hate and racism is very different from taking healthy precautions.

Grace,it’s a nice observation !!China is ruled by the Communists!!

They take all steps to hide the magnitude of disaster and ensure that world remains in dark about it!!

Right. Didn’t the Chinese government ban the media from promptly revealing the melanin scare because the Olympics was fast approaching? That act killed thousands of children in China, and affected many others outside China.

Nice observations Grace (and Arvind)!

There is a very big difference between Mexico and China’s handeling of the health crisises.

We did not tryto hide it all. Maybe we were not quick enough to catch the fact that this was a different virus and not just your normal seasonal flu, cold, or respitory infection..but once it was known, not a second was spared. Our country was locked down with nation wide prevanative measures and suspensions almost instantly.

The big nations display very-2 strange traits.U.S. boasts of transparency in sensitive matters. However,it took all steps to ensure that world never comes to know about actualities in Iraq.It censored the news so that world outside U.S. is aware of the facts at par with the interests of U.S. !!

China-the emerging superpower-has still to provide total freedom to its people and media. In other words,it’s still not able to develop healthy standards that justifies its superpower tag.

However,if anything goes wrong in developing countries or India both U.S. and China are the first one’s that become hypersensitive about the details. They want all the details. They send their agencies to ascertain the facts and are little hesitant in expressing their displeasure.

I just want to know why are they so much bothered about certain standards in these nations trapped in problems or why are they so conscious about transparency when they themselves prefer secrecy in times of crisis? Why they make the developing countries more tense in times of crisis by pointing out their drawbacks in humiliating manner ?

Any answers please ?
